1. Bognor Regis,

Chichester and District

branch of the

Samaritans

Our Purpose is:

1.             To enable  people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those who may be at risk of suicide, to receive confidential emotional support at any time of the day or night from appropriately trained Samaritans, in order to improve their emotional health and to reduce the incidence of suicide.

2.           To promote a better

understanding in society of suicide, suicidal behavior and the value of expressing feelings which  may otherwise lead to suicide or impaired emotional health.

The confidential nature of the service means we do not know where people are when they contact us. Last year we dealt around 20,000 contacts. People contact us for many reasons, including relationship and family problems; loss of family, friends or job; health and financial worries and job-related stress.

We believe that these issues affect all parts of the area that we cover. In addition to phone, email and face-to-face contacts at our Bognor Regis centre, over the last few years we have expanded our outreach work  Volunteers visit  the day centres run by  Stonepillow in Chichester and Bognor Regis once a month, and attend A&E at St Richards. In addition, every    Thursday evening to provide emotional support when needed. We have a team who go into local schools to talk about emotional health, some volunteers provide talks on Samaritans to local groups (WI, Mothers Union, Rotary, etc) and some of our volunteers have been trained to support Network Rail.

To support the costs of delivering the  service.

Our major expenditure is on volunteer selection and training and volunteers travel expenses. A donation from your Council would help ensure that people in crisis have confidential support, day or night, every day of the year, by enabling us to recruit and train more volunteers. We need more volunteers if we are to expand our outreach activities with the schools, Stonepillow, St Richards and Network Rail.

Our Branch is run totally by volunteers and to keep the branch operating we need around £14,000 per year. Our volunteers are all trained to provide a listening ear, in confidence and without judging, to anyone    who is going through a difficult time, including those who may be suicidal. Anyone. young or old, can contact us by phone or visit the Branch to talk through anything that may be troubling them. Some people find it easier to write their feelings down rather than talk about them, and our email and text services are the preferred medium for many young people.

Funding is being requested towards the hire of the large marquee for the Annual Flower Show in August. The marquee alone on the playing field costs £1,300 and although we run a fundraiser during the year, and we are seeking sponsorship. It is almost impossible to break even. We have also applied to Ford Parish Council for a grant.

For the last few years the August Flower Show has expanded to become a family event for all the village. The feedback from visitors was excellent, and this year it will extend even further with a fun dof show, and village games organized by St Mary’s Church. 8.    St Mary’s Church – Peace Window Project

As you are aware, St Mary's Yapton is a beautiful church building which lies at the centre of our village community. For many hundreds of years this is where the people of Yapton have married, christened their babies and buried their loved ones. It is not just a place of worship, but a place where people from many different walks of life come to find peace and solace at some of the most difficult times of their lives.

In 2014, in response to the 100th Anniversary of the start of the First World War, we considered the importance of peace as a Christian concept and something as a community we all strive to achieve. As a result we decided that we would like to install a new stained glass window in the west window of the church over the porch, with the theme of 'Peace, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Armistice in 2018.

In developing the window with Derek Hunt of Limelight Studios, the artist that we have commissioned to design and make the window, many people, both from church and the local community, were involved in exploring different aspects of Peace and discussing what form the window should take. The final design is very beautiful and will enhance the church building for future generations to appreciate. This is not just a church project, but involves the community as a whole: we believe that St Mary's is at the very heart of Yapton and as a Grade II listed building is of historical significance to all.

The cost of the Peace Window is in the region of £20,000. We have to raise all of the monies ourselves which you will appreciate is quite a challenge. We receive no government or local authority support. As local businessmen with an interest in supporting community projects, we would like to invite you to make a donation towards the installation of the window. We plan to keep a record of all donors as part of the historical archive of the church. Any donation, no matter how small, will be very much appreciated.

St Mary’s PCC received £150 in 2015 for the closed churchyard maintenance

9.    Tyler’s Trust

Tyler is an incredible local teenager, who has been battling a brain tumour for 5 years, during this time he has undergone 26 operations and undergone Radiotherapy. He has faced huge challenges including learning to walk again and visual difficulties. Due to the amount of time Tyler has spent in hospital he has decided to help other children going through similar things to him. The aim of the trust is to provide a balloon and gift box to each child suffering from a brain tumour or other life threatening illness, each sibling also received a bag of presents. The cost of eaxh box is approximately £150 and each gift bag £75.

The Trust covers the areas of Worthing, Chichester, Portsmouth and Southampton Hospitals. Geographically we will not increase our area but we will increase the service that we offer to local families. For example the Trust is now also supplying emergency overnight parental bags to local children’s wards, making donations to the wards as required, supplying home essentials kits and hosting a free family fun day. We are also looking at further ways to support families such as days out.

We are supporting some of the most vulnerable families in your area and would ask for some help if possible.
